Essential Oils Journey - Part 2

Hey-o! Look at me, keeping up with a multi-part series, aren’t you proud!?

I wrote a few months ago about how I was going to start integrating essential oils (EO’s) into my life. I started small, by replacing my nighttime moisturizer with a DIY serum and I am so glad that I did! I have also been diffusing oils around the house, especially during the night to help us sleep and here is what I’ve found so far about both things:

Nighttime Serum:

When I started this journey I was just using coconut oil on my face at night. People scoffed at that though because apparently it isn’t good for your skin… *shrug* it seemed to be working for me at the time. However, now that I am using REAL face/skin oils I can see the difference. Before starting this routine I had dry skin, flaking, blackheads, yellowish tint, bags under my eyes, large pores, acne scars… yeah… I wasn’t gonna be on the cover of Vogue any time soon.

I made my own serum going off of what I read from Nadia at Body Unburdened. She has a post about the best oils for your skin and I went from there, a lot of my knowledge comes from her posts. I started by picking and choosing my oils based on what my skin needed the most and here is what I came up with:

Jojoba oil (moisturizing carrier oil)

Castor oil (anti inflammatory and anti bacterial carrier oil)

Ylang Ylang Essential Oil (minimizes breakouts)

Rose Essential Oil (helps with skin texture and tone)

Lavender Essential Oil (helps regenerate the skin, reducing scarring and other marks)

The Jojoba oil is now my new BFF, no joke people! It is so light and leaves your skin feeling so soft and clean. I added Castor oil, only ¼ the amount of Jojoba oil though because it is super thick and I didn’t want to feel like I was sleeping with slime on my face. I chose the three essential oils based on what my skin needed (texture, tone, scarring and acne). I also went for Ylang Ylang and Rose mostly because of their smells… I’m a huge fan of floral scents.

Two months into using this at night after washing my face, here is what I’ve noticed. Hardly any black heads, acne has gone down significantly, my skin tone is better, the yellowing under my eyes has gone down (although not completely gone) and my skin never feels dry anymore and has stopped flaking which is saying a lot considering I live in Colorado!

The results from the night time use of oils alone have got me researching how to make all my beauty products at home. One day I will overhaul my entire beauty supply and make natural oil-based products! Post coming soon.

In complete honesty I have not noticed anything life changing about diffusing oils. It smells fabulous that’s for sure. But I have not noticed a difference in my health or general sense of well being when I diffuse. That being said I still do diffuse because I want to keep experimenting with it and it’s nice to have a fresh scent in the house. But here are my favorite combinations so far and the times of day I use them:

Ylang Ylang and Rose: I would do this all day every day if I could, but because of the calming properties in them I use them at night. I also will mix a tiny bit of lavender with them.

Lavender and Eucalyptus: This is a nighttime one for sure. Especially if we’re feeling a bit under the weather. The eucalyptus helps clear the sinuses and the lavender is calming.

Lemon and Grapefruit: This is the most refreshing combination I’ve found yet. It is a great pick me up and I diffuse it in the mornings when I’m still a bit sleepy.

Lavender: This is a go-to just because I’ve always loved the smell of lavender and it is calming.

Lemongrass: Another great refreshing one. It makes the house smell clean and it is said to aid in waking you up.

Overall my experience with Essential Oils has been great and I’m anxious to learn more about them. It’s a steep learning curve, that’s for sure! Do you use essential oils? If so how?
